Spectacular venues: We run our ShowKids drama workshops in The Old Fire Station every Thursday from 4-6pm but this atmospheric Victorian red brick building hosts loads of other great kids clubs too. There are also classes, ranging from baby yoga to ballet, held under the vaulted ceiling of Abney Public Hall, in St. Mary’s Church and at the grand Georgian mansion Clissold House.
Quirky places to explore: Clissold Park is the parents’ mecca. It has a great playground, a herd of deer, some cheeky goats and an aviary full of birds which kids can enjoy peeping at. You can also get lost in Abney Park Cemetery, a spooky place of tangled trees and moss-covered gravestones hidden just off Church Street. Or head to Woodberry Wetlands, a peaceful nature reserve where tower blocks look over reed-fringed pools and kids can spot birds from the boardwalk.
Village vibes: You might think you’ve entered a Sussex village as you saunter down Stoke Newington Church Street for the first time. The organic farmers market is stuffed full of tasty local produce and you can browse the Hackney Flea Market or independent shops like Olive Loves Alfie, which sells lovely toys and games. Stoke Newington Book Shop is the perfect place to while away a rainy hour. And of course, there are child-friendly local pubs like The Rose and Crown.
Brunch heaven: There are too many good cafes to mention but our favourite is The Good Egg for Middle Eastern dishes like shakshuka. There’s also The Blue Legume for European classics like croque monsieur and the plant-festooned Green Room Café for egg dishes and homemade cakes. And for dinner (if one/both of you have a ticket out!..) try one of the many Turkish grills, Osteria Wolf for fancy Italian, or Rasa for Keralan curries.
