Urban jungles: Leyton Jubilee Park is great for kids, with its beach volleyball courts, nature areas and a pavilion with a nice café. Next door are the wilder Hackney Marshes and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with state-of-art sports facilities – including the beautiful London Aquatics Centre – the Orbit giant slide, adventure playgrounds and fountains and gardens for kids to run wild. Close-by are Wanstead Flats; the Hollow Ponds, where you can hire a rowing boat; wildlife-rich Walthamstow Wetlands; and Epping Forest.
Baby-friendly bars: We like the Leyton Star with its heated cabanas and the terrace decked out with golden palm tree lights. The Heathcote and Star has the biggest garden in the area and serves great food. And we have to mention Theatre of Wine – an off-license which hosts tastings and events including BYOB – that’s bring your own baby(!) – so that local parents can catch up over a glass of vino.
Foodie heaven: Frances Road is our favourite Saturday morning stroll – stuffed full of amazing independent shops, cafes and restaurants. We love Yardarm for its croissants, cheeses and lots of other naughty things you shouldn’t give a toddler! Marmelo Kitchen serves gorgeous food and has a canteen-style salad bar. And just a short walk from Francis Road is Deeney’s, a cafe with a play area that’s famous for its Haggis toasties.
Play-time: Leyton Leisure Centre has one of the best kids’ swimming pools for miles thanks to its numerous water slides and a wet play area for little ones. We also recommend a trip to Brooks Farm where kids can meet sheep, donkeys, ponies, goats, rabbits and other animals. Or you can always get lost in the Coronation Gardens maze.
