The importance of role-play in child development

Category : Uncategorized

“Ok, you be the king and I’ll be the witch…” When you hear a child say something like this you know they’ll be happily entertained for a good while but there are other benefits to children engaging in role-play. This kind of creative play can spark imaginations, develop important social skills and, particularly in a structured environment, be educational. Here are some of the ways that role-play can contribute to a child’s development:

It inspires creativity

Even organised role-play relies on imagination and this kind creative play is a great way to develop children’s ability to think for themselves. In a situation where there is no ‘right’ answer or set conclusion children are free to let their imaginations run wild and not only can this foster creativity but the ability to problem solve in the future. As Albert Einstein said: “Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.”

It allows kids to explore the world safely

Role-play allows children to act out scenarios and to make sense of situations they have already experienced or may come across in real life, but in a supported environment where children can explore different emotional responses to these social situations. Role-play is an important way for children to explore who they are as individuals as they carve a place into the world around them. Being someone else for a time gives kids the freedom to test out different roles and personalities but also helps them to build confidence and in turn, self-esteem.

It helps to develop good social skills

Even as children decide on the topic of their game and the rules of engagement they are learning skills like collaboration and negotiation but as the role-play develops children are learning to walk in someone else’s shoes and developing their understanding of how others react to different situations, which makes them more empathetic. As children engage in role-play they develop communication skills, learning to choose their words carefully so that others can understand them as well as listening to others in order for the game to run smoothly.

It can be educational

Whether children are stomping around pretending to be elephants, cooking pretend cakes or playing doctors and nurses, role-play can teach them about the world. What sound does an elephant make? What ingredients go together to make a cake? What do nurses say to their patients? These kinds of games can improve general knowledge, vocabulary and even number and motor skills. Role-play is a fun way to introduce important topics and explore other cultures. It can be amusing or slightly disconcerting when you hear a little one repeat a very grown-up phrase but role-play is a great way to try out new words and, with a little help, get to understand what they mean too!

ShowKids’ after-school performing arts workshops use role-play in a fun but supported environment help children to connect with others, find confidence, foster creativity and develop social skills. Our caring, expert practitioners will bring out the best in your child through drama, singing and dance.

Scholarships

We believe in the power of the Performing Arts to transform lives, and that a high-quality Arts education should be available to every child.

Having delivered successful Performing Arts courses from Key Stage 2-5 in mainstream education for many years, Natalie and her team have experienced first-hand the negative impact of austerity on the quality and uptake of Arts subjects in schools (Read an article here). Part of Natalie’s motivation to set up ShowKids was her commitment to deliver a quality Arts provision unrestrained by league tables, restrictive curriculums or inadequate funding.

One place in each of our centres is provided free of charge to any child qualifying for Free School Meals and who is identified by our partner schools as one who would benefit the most from our courses, and would not otherwise be able to access extra-curricular activities.

Why we love Walthamstow for Kids

Here are a few of our favourite things to do with children in Walthamstow…

Fun for kids: We run our ShowKids Performing Arts workshops from the Waltham Forest United Reformed Church on Orford Road (Wednesdays) and the Greenleaf Centre just off Hoe Street (Thursdays), putting us at the heart of Walthamstow’s community, where loads of family-friendly events go on. We love Orford Road  and the brilliant indie shop WORD which sells kids clothes and toys as well hosting socials and events for families.

Eating around E17: Our favourite child-friendly places to eat include Sodo pizza; community coffee shop Wynwood Art District for cake and homemade sandwiches; Today Bread for gorgeous sourdough sandwiches; Buhler and Co for brunch; and family-friendly pub The Castle for a Sunday roast.

Art and culture: Walk around Walthamstow and art will find you, but Wood Street Walls offers tours of the street murals. E17’s art is eclectic but we love to explore the dazzling collection of neon signs at God’s Own Junkyard just as much as the textiles and paintings at the William Morris Gallery. Kids love the Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum for its old fire engine and model railway. And we recommend Craftworks Café, on Hoe Street, where families can try ceramic painting over food, wine and coffee!

Great outdoors: We love strolling around Lloyd Park which has a lovely café, tennis courts, and a great food market on Saturdays. Close by is the Walthamstow Wetlands, a haven for wildlife centred around a reservoir which supplies 3.5 million people! There’s also Walthamstow marshes and Epping Forest on the doorstep. And if it’s an indoor kind of day, head to Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre. Not only does it have a gym and pool, but a trampoline park, two-storey soft play area and a relaxing spa.

Why We Love Stoke Newington for Kids

Here are a few of our favourite things to do with children in Stoke Newington…

Stokey is a special place with two very different sides, but we love it all the way from the organic coffee shops on Church Street to the Turkish kebab houses on the High Street. Families in Stoke Newington will certainly never be bored!

Spectacular venues: We run our ShowKids drama workshops in The Old Fire Station every Thursday from 4-6pm but this atmospheric Victorian red brick building hosts loads of other great kids clubs too. There are also classes, ranging from baby yoga to ballet, held under the vaulted ceiling of Abney Public Hall, in St. Mary’s Church and at the grand Georgian mansion Clissold House.

Quirky places to explore: Clissold Park is the parents’ mecca. It has a great playground, a herd of deer, some cheeky goats and an aviary full of birds which kids  can enjoy peeping at. You can also get lost in Abney Park Cemetery, a spooky place of tangled trees and moss-covered gravestones hidden just off Church Street. Or head to Woodberry Wetlands, a peaceful nature reserve where tower blocks look over reed-fringed pools and kids can spot birds from the boardwalk.

Village vibes: You might think you’ve entered a Sussex village as you saunter down Stoke Newington Church Street for the first time. The organic farmers market is stuffed full of tasty local produce and you can browse the Hackney Flea Market or independent shops like Olive Loves Alfie, which sells lovely toys and games. Stoke Newington Book Shop is the perfect place to while away a rainy hour. And of course, there are child-friendly local pubs like The Rose and Crown.

Brunch heaven: There are too many good cafes to mention but our favourite is The Good Egg for Middle Eastern dishes like shakshuka. There’s also The Blue Legume for European classics like croque monsieur and the plant-festooned Green Room Café for egg dishes and homemade cakes. And for dinner (if one/both of you have a ticket out!..) try one of the many Turkish grills, Osteria Wolf for fancy Italian, or Rasa for Keralan curries.

What Makes ShowKids Different?

Qualified Expert Practitioners

All of our practitioners are experts in their subject and are either qualified performing arts teachers (PGCE) or successful, trained actors – many with first-hand experience of professional theatre, TV and film. This experience of the Arts Industry, and of mainstream primary and secondary education, allows our practitioners to ensure that all our ShowKids are inspired and challenged in their workshops.

Bespoke Workshops

Our workshops are created by us – for each individual class – to ensure content is relevant, inspiring, and that every child develops at their own pace through skills-based activities and performance opportunities.

Focus on skill development – not just performance

We don’t believe children develop a love for the arts by learning endless lines for half-termly performances. Our workshops are focused on nurturing children to become confident members of a group, empathetic individuals, as well as performers. Our method enables children the time to embed the skills they are developing each week before working towards a performance in the following term. Children always have the opportunity to share and perform their work to their peers in every workshop, developing confidence and communication skills.

Personalised Feedback

All our parents receive personalised half-termly written feedback on their child, to support conversations at home and help our ShowKids develop their confidence using new language and key terms.

An Independent East London Company

Our practitioners live and work in East London. We know our ShowKids and our parents well, and pride ourselves in the trusting relationships we have built with them. We think this is why 91% of our ShowKids have attended workshops for more than two years!

Holiday Courses

We provide affordable musical theatre and drama workshops in school holidays with work-friendly hours!

In our half-term and summer holiday performing arts courses, children have the opportunity to create an original performance inspired by a musical, play or topic. Children work alongside highly qualified performing arts practitioners to create their own scenes, songs and dances in an extremely creative and inclusive environment. Instruments are experimented with, props are made, set is designed and performance material is created without a prewritten text where children may feel constrained or restricted in what they can achieve.

Regular theatre trips and workshops led by industry professionals

We compliment our performing arts courses and drama lessons with regular theatre experiences. Through these the children are transported into the hearts and minds of the characters, recognising and understanding their actions and feelings which encourages communication and empathy. We often have guest actors from the West End, film and television lead our workshops. This gives children a real insight into the industry and the opportunity to ask questions about the life of an actor.

What Parents Say

“We love Showkids – it has been a real turning point for our six year old son – we’ve seen his confidence grow massively. Seeing him perform on a stage was a big moment. Natalie and the team are completely tuned into the children who attend their classes – the skills our little boy is learning with Showkids are vital life skills and he’s having a lot of fun!! I highly recommend!”

Bruno’s mum, Stoke Newington

“My daughter joined Show Kids last year. After trying out different drama classes run by well known national companies (most of them overcrowded), we finally found a drama school which is genuine and lead by professional tutors who are extremely passionate, caring and understanding with the children. She has learned so much and already played major roles in plays such as Annie and Midsummer night’s dream. Highly recommended!”

Uxua’s mum, Stoke Newington

“Showkids is a fantastic place for your child to grow their confidence and try new things. My daughter has been going to Showkids for three years now and she absolutely loves it. The teachers are knowledgeable professionals that always get the best out of the children without it feeling pressured and it’s always fun whilst they learn. What I like about it is that it’s intimate and not too big a group, not only do they perform using their acting, singing and dancing skills but they also learn about other things such as scene changing, improvisation, timing etc. It’s brilliant and I’d thoroughly recommend it.”

Martha’s mum, Stoke Newington

“A fantastic program teaching real dramatic skills in a fun environment my daughter absolutely loves. Highly recommend.”

Ady’s mum, Stoke Newington

“I cannot recommend Natalie and her fantastic team at Showkids enough. They seem to perfect a balance of fun and professionalism, giving a level of ambition to the lessons without overwhelming or pressuring the kids. I also like their sense of community that ensures that the shy kids don’t get left behind.”

Florence’s mum, Hackney

“The perfect place to help encourage and develop children who love to perform – whether it’s acting, singing or dancing! My child has attended various other performing schools in the past, none of which she’s enjoyed as much as ShowKids. Would recommend to any parent considering somewhere to help nurture their child in all performing areas, as I’ve seen a huge difference in my child since joining. Teachers are also very talented & kind/considerate :)”

Mya’s dad, Stoke Newington

“My children adore ShowKids, it’s the best holiday course they have done. The practitioners possess a remarkable combination of kindness and talent, so the children get an intense sense of both well-being and creative achievement.
And the shows are wonderful!”

Dora and Ada’s mum, Hackney

“My kids absolutely love the ShowKids after-school workshops! They are so beneficial and in particular have really helped build Isla’s confidence and communication skills. The practitioners are great with the kids and so passionate about teaching them how to express themselves through drama, dance and singing. I highly recommend ShowKids”

Isla’s mum, Stoke Newington

“It’s always a relief when your child runs in without a look back”

Charlie’s mum, Hackney

“The holiday course was really comprehensive, the children worked not just on acting, singing and dancing but also developed skills in prop, costume and set making”

Maya’s mum, Hackney

“Incredible experience for the children this week, you’ve really infected them with so much enthusiasm and helped them both to release their talents!”

Milo and Theo’s dad, Stoke Newington

“My children enjoy all the classes and always look forward to Monday evenings, my daughter is counting down the days until it’s half-term as she’s so excited to attend the holiday course! The prices are very affordable and I am kept up-to-date on the progress of my children. I would definitely recommend ShowKids!”

Shaun and Aquila’s mum, Hackney

“Can’t recommend ShowKids enough. Our boys just love the holiday courses and after-school workshops. They are still singing the songs from the ShowWeek several weeks later! Natalie and Tom are incredibly enthusiastic and inspiring. In just a week’s summer workshop they created a real little acting troupe, with a fantastic group dynamic. Genuinely impressive performance too. I should also add that the groups are really inclusive. Our youngest is now joining too and Natalie’s been incredibly accommodating and supportive of his additional learning needs”

Milo and Theo’s mum, Stoke Newington

“My daughter Holly really enjoys ShowKids – it has increased her confidence and it really is amazing what they achieve in a short space of time”

Holly’s mum, Hackney

“The Best!!! My daughter is the happiest when she is at ShowKids! Wonderful knowledgeable and caring tutor who encourages and inspires the children. Will be signing on until Edith hits Broadway!”

Edith’s mum, Hackney

“A fantastic experience my children will never forget thank you Natalie, Tom and all of the ShowKids team! They loved your half term course (Aquila has started planning Easter Holidays!). Every day when picking them up the excitement and enthusiasm they show when speaking about their day is priceless, most importantly they have also made friend’s. Thank you all for your time and patience”

Shaun and Aquila’s mum, Hackney

Mindfulness for Children

Research is proving that programmes that incorporate mindfulness activities for children can support them to improve their concentration and memory, develop self-control and reduce anxiety levels.

Mindfulness benefits:

  • Improved resilience
  • Improved concentration
  • Improved ability to manage stress
  • Ability to manage thoughts positively
  • Improved memory
  • Patience

We utilise the techniques of other mindfulness programmes for children by underpinning some of our practical activities and discussions on these. In a workshop, this might simply mean children:

  • Have time to sit on their own before a task to visualise their role in the group
  • Empathise with other students in the room, or characters in their group to appreciate how they might be feeling
  • Paint a scene while discussing what smells and sounds they would be experiencing if they were there
  • Take part in simple breathing exercises to calm and focus their mind before a performance
