Spaces for the community: Durning Hall Community Centre is great for families and hosts all kinds of kids clubs, including our Thursday ShowKids workshops from 4-6pm. We love a wander around the Forest Gate Community Garden, a blooming haven tucked away among the Victorian terraces which runs teddy bears’ picnics and lovely nature-inspired events for families.
Natural highs: Who needs parks when you have Wanstead Flats? This huge area of grassland is a breath of fresh air and although it’s bordered by urban east London on all sides, it marks the southern-most part of Epping Forest (hence Forest Gate) and you can access true countryside through this green corridor.
Food, glorious food: Tromsø Café E7 is Scandinavian heaven where you can eat incredible cinnamon buns and open sandwiches on sourdough and rye, all while seated on exceedingly stylish furniture. We also love Fred’s Café for its delicious flatbreads; and the Holly Tree for its pub grub and the huge beer garden – complete with a miniature railway!
Local haunts: Number 8 Forest Gate Emporium is a bit of an institution in Forest Gate. It looks like a jumble sale at first glance but it’s packed with unique items, like paintings, vintage clothing, furniture and jewellery lovingly handmade by the owner Jeff. The Forest Gate Railway Arches are now home to thriving business, like The Old Slate Yard which sells flowers and reclaimed pottery; the Space East Yoga Centre, where we also run our ShowKids workshops every Monday 4-6pm; and the kid-friendly Wanstead Tap which sells craft beers and hosts music and comedy in the evenings.
